The Sixteen Days of Halloween: Day 10

Today’s Halloween tune is actually several.  Today we’ll talk about some songs from horror movies and the like.  First up is “The Time Warp”* from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  This one isn’t terribly spooky, but the lyrics and unusualness of the tune get in on The List.  Another semi-spooky tune from Rocky Horror that I happen to like a little better is “Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me”* (commonly known as “Creature of the Night”).  “Creature,” as I like to call it, is a fairly decent song, even if it is buried in lots of movie dialogue and other nonsense (C’mon, you know you go to midnight showings of Rocky Horror and shout out these lines at the screen!  Admit it!).

 

Next up is “Toccata and Fugue in D minor”* by Bach.  This one has been used in countless movie soundtracks, and you’ll recognize it immediately if you give it a listen.  I know I said I wouldn’t use instrumentals in The List, but, hey, I changed my mind.  This one belongs on any list of Halloween tunes.  Rumor has it that its spookiness comes from Bach simply wanting a piece that would thoroughly test an organ.  That's right:  the creepiest organ composition ever was probably written as an instrument tuning aid.

 

Next is “Tales from the Crypt,”* another instrumental.  I know I said I wouldn’t use TV series themes, but, hey, I changed my mind.  I’m doing that a lot today.  This isn’t a goofy little sing-along like the Addams Family theme.  It’s a haunting concoction that oozes with mystery.  Right up there with it is “Nightmare on Elm Street.”*  I can personally attest that “Nightmare” is a great song to make out to.  The way the drums and synthesizer play against one another makes for a truly eerie listening experience, especially when you’re in the backseat of a car and the only other thing breaking the darkness is the faint glow of the dashboard.

 

I'd be remiss if I didn't include “Werewolves of London”* in some form or fashion on The List.  Ironically, it was not used on the soundtrack for An American Werewolf in London, though David Naughton (the star of the movie and “that Dr. Pepper guy” from the 70s) mused aloud about how inexplicable it was that the song wasn’t used in the movie on its DVD release.  The song was used on the soundtrack for The Color of Money (that execrable Tom Cruise tribute to 80s shamelessness).  It’s a real pity it got mixed up with a movie like that, but it seems to have come through relatively unscathed. 

 

The funny, campy lyrics are a large part of what makes “Werewolves” so timeless:

Chinese menu in hand?  Perfect hair?  Sounds like Jack Nicholson.  (By the way, Lee Ho Fook’s is a real place in London.  Watch out for the shrimp—mine tasted like motor oil.)

 

Warren Zevon and company outdid themselves on this one.  It’s a horror song classic.  Ah-ooo!

 

The last one I’ll cover today is “Funk Nassau”* from the movie Blues Brothers 2000.  This one is not terribly spooky, but the boys are transformed into some type of green-skinned zombies by it, so I guess it counts.  The incomparable Erykah Badu plays a voodoo queen and makes the song her very own.  Dallas-born Erykah is one of the greatest talents in R&B.  She has the beauty and style of a Beyoncé and the raw musical ability of a Billie Holiday.  Her vivacious rendition of this song is one of the few bright spots in the entire movie and a show-stealer if ever there was one.

Anton Szandor LaVey 1930-1997 Marilyn Manson lost both an idol & a "weird father figure" when Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey dies of heart disease in San Francisco last October. He was 67. LaVey's antitheistic religion, which he launched in 1966, is based on a Social Darwinian philosophy espousing rugged individualism, ego gratification, hedonism, & magical powers. Though the charismatic occultist was embraced by the hippie counterculture of the late 60's, he was widely denounced by Christians throughout the world. "Anton gave me the extra determination I needed when I was facing the height of my opposition," Manson says. "If you look at the outrage he engendered at the time, it's not unlike what I've seen over the past two years." LaVey played the Devil in the 1968 film Rosemary's Baby, but is best know for the cult bestseller The Satanic Bible, which he published to instant notoriety in 1969. He had secluded himself in his black Victorian mansion in San Francisco since the early 80's, but his youth was marked by such disparate résumé builders as lion trainer, police photographer, & paranormal investigator. Throughout his life he was a consummate musician, adept at everything from the violin to the calliope. LaVey became an oboist with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra at the age of 16, & later played organ for circuses, burlesque shows, silent movies, traveling tent revivals, & official civic functions. "He really was a musical genius," says his daughter Karla LaVey, 45. "He could play almost any instrument you put in front of him." In recent years, the San Francisco- based Amarillo Records released Satan Takes a Holiday & several other recordings of LaVey's reditions of the music he truly loved: the bombastic, melodramatic tunes of yesteryear. "He was a warm & witty guy who was really into the old novelties & pranks you see in the back of comic books," says Amarillo owner Gregg Turkington. "He had a remote control whoopie cushion that he'd hide in his couch when people came over." The owner of a massive record collection, LaVey was dedicated to documenting pop culture's ephemera, not unlike his late comtemporary Tiny Tim. Asked how her father would have wanted to be remembered, Karla LaVey says simply, "for providing an alternative for people who feel different." "He lived a full life & should be proud of all the people he's enraged," adds Manson. "I'm sure he's sitting in hell right now & laughing." In any case, LaVey's lifelong fight against what he considered mind-numbing Judeo-Christian indoctrination had had a profound impact on alienatied youth. Then, of course, there's his contribution to hipster fashion: the shaved-head-with-goatee look. "I took my father out for a ride recently," Karla says, "and as we're driving down Castro Street, he looked out the window & said, 'What is this? All these guys look like me!'"

Colors.

Colors are most commonly associated with candle-burning, but you don't have to stop there. Visualizations, ritual garb, or sympathetic magick pieces can all "match." Color, like the elements, is another easy component to work with because of how it bypasses words and intellect straight into senses and emotions, and the subconscious.

WHITE: This is the "spiritual" color, often associated with purity and holiness. It's also considered an all-purpose candle by bringing a higher direction when burned with any other candle. On its own, white can be used for purely religious rites, or for issues of protection or "cleansing"-oftentimes a black film will appear on the rim of the candle, which can be taken to mean that there's a lot of negativity in the air that's being "caught" by the candle. White is also a good color for truth coming to the surface, which is why it's popular for stopping gossip.

RED: Red is the number one color for love spells, typically to enhance attraction or heighten sexuality. It is also a color for courage, drive, and forceful energy.

ORANGE: A vibrant color that brings forth creativity and energy.

GOLD: Sometimes it's easy to confuse gold with orange in darkened little shops-gold is the darker, duller one. This is the practical color, most commonly used for work and employment issues. But it's also used success for creative endeavors-the orange is good for helping you write a story, gold is for helping you get it published.

YELLOW: Happiness and friendship.

GREEN: The most popular use of green is for money gained by luck and gambling, although you can also pair it gold for a raise at a job or whatever. Green can also be used for healing and growth, which I think makes it an excellent color to get married in.

BLUE: The candle of peace and tranquility. This can be used to "cool down" a simmering situation. It's also commonly used for healing.

PURPLE: The power color. This is a color that can be paired with other colors to add extra power to specific workings, or can be just fine on its own.

PINK: Affectionate friendship, more intimate than yellow but not as hot as red.

BLACK: Interpretations vary over this controversial color. Yes, traditionally it's been used for hexing. Yes, it's common practice to always, always burn a white candle beside it. But it's also all of the colors mixed together, whereas white is the absence of light. While using your subconscious impressions is a good guide for your crafts, I think modern culture has been a little too quick to swallow judgments and prejudices about (gasp) the darkness-black is not always bad. I myself prefer a cool midnight to a blinding white light(which the Japanese regard as the color of death). Then again strange things have been known to happen when you burn these suckers. Do what you will.
